MCW has partnered exclusively with the Vortechs Group in their search for this key individual to help facilitate the transfer of technology generated from research and clinical practices into commercial products that benefit MCW, the Milwaukee community, and the greater public.
The Department: Office of Technology Development (OTD)
Using a concierge model, OTD staff work alongside inventors throughout the entire commercialization process: from the initial disclosure of the invention through the evaluation of commercial potential, from the protection of the intellectual property to marketing, to negotiation of license agreements, to maintenance of relationships with industry partners. In the last five years, the office has:
- received 238 invention disclosures
- filed 279 patents
- maintained over 60 active license agreements
- helped found 25 start-up companies founded on licensed MCW technologies from approximately 350 faculty, fellows, staff and students.
The Opportunity
As the Director of the Office of Technology Development, you will be responsible for leading a team comprised of two Licensing Managers, one Director of Research Commercialization, one Marketing Manager and a Financial Analyst who drive discoveries from the Medical College of Wisconsin into commercial products to benefit society, impact public health, and improve the overall quality of life for families everywhere.
In this role, you will serve, support, and educate MCW faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff by facilitating the transfer of technology generated from their research and clinical practices into commercial products that benefit MCW, our community, and the public at large. You will direct the activities and personnel in the Office of Technology Development (OTD), and may also manage a portion of MCW’s intellectual property portfolio. The Director of OTD executes appropriate strategies to identify, evaluate, patent or otherwise protect, and license intellectual property.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Advanced degree in biomedical sciences; or MBA/JD with background in technology transfer in biomedical sciences.
- Advanced degree in biomedical sciences; or MBA/JD with background in technology transfer in biomedical sciences.
- Minimum seven years of experience in technology transfer/business development, with knowledge of an academic setting and in the area of biomedical sciences.• Experience and knowledge in key functional areas, such as licensing, commercialization, and deal structuring.
- Thorough understanding of patent law; market analysis, negotiation, and technology evaluation skills and abilities.
- Excellent working knowledge of intellectual property management, with an ability to analyze and present critical issues.
- Experience in advocating for appropriate operating resources, demonstrating the value of the office to leadership, budgeting, managing within the established budget, and building high-performing teams/coalitions.
