The Position

The Business Development Associate will be responsible for handling license agreements, a portfolio of IP, and training and mentoring of junior team members. These responsibilities will be completed with limited direction from the Associate Director. The Business Development Associate will be expected to manage special initiatives for the benefit of the Office of Technology Management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Process and manage invention and material disclosures as assigned by the Office of Technology Management Associate Director. The cases managed by the Business Development Associate are often complicated in nature. For example, the Business Development Associate will work with those faculty members that have a large and diverse portfolio and where substantial grant funds (both public and private) are involved. The Business Development Associate will evaluate the technology for patentability and market potential and ensure that investigators are making clear, meaningful disclosures. These responsibilities will be completed with minimal direction from the Associate Director.
  • Complete the Technology Assessment within 60 days of receiving the invention disclosure. This assessment should include an evaluation of the business opportunity, the best path for licensing, the list potential licensees, the estimated financial/market value, and the recommendation to Office of Technology Management as to patentability and commercial viability. This assessment should require minimal input on the part of the Associate Director.
  • Provide first-line review of agreements involving materials moving between for-profit institutions and the University.
